US senators propose legislation to limit ICE arrests and indefinite detention
In response to proposed ICE legislation from Democratic Senators Dick Durbin and Alex Padilla aimed at curbing warrantless arrests and indefinite detention, the Texas-based nonprofit RAICES criticized the Immigration Warrant Reform Act for failing to protect vulnerable immigrants. Speaking on behalf of RAICES, co-chief executive Faisal Al-Juburi warned that vague exceptions allowing arrests for imminent danger to the community give ICE officers broad leeway to weaponize unsubstantiated national security allegations and advance anti-immigrant agendas. Ultimately, RAICES expressed deep skepticism toward the reform bill, arguing that it fails to reject the inhumane notion of subjecting noncitizens to civil immigration detention and loss of liberty for non-criminal matters.
