RAICES Responds to President Biden's Remarks on Border Deal Package: ‘History is Watching’
SAN ANTONIO — In response to President Biden’s address to the nation regarding the Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, RAICES released the following statement:
RAICES condemns any bill that guts our country’s longstanding commitment to the legal and human right to seek asylum in the U.S.
The proposed package is a war funding bill, not a “fair and humane” immigration bill that is “consistent with the values of America,” as President Biden claimed today in his address to the nation. Less than 20% of the reported $118 billion dollars will go toward immigration, and it does not address the failures of our system — let alone “seriously and finally fix the immigration system,” as the President purports.
“This is not an immigration bill that meets the needs of this generation, and it certainly fails to acknowledge the humanitarian considerations that are central to a compassionate and effective immigration system,” says RAICES CEO Dolores K. Schroeder. She continues, “The creation of a fair and just immigration system should not be a bargaining chip in government funding negotiations. We refuse to allow a bipartisan assault on the humanity of our community members to continue in our names.”
To conclude, we repeat the words of President Biden: "History is watching."
