Report to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances

In a significant joint submission to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (UNWGEID), RAICES joined a coalition of six other prominent human rights organizations to sound the alarm on the short-term enforced disappearance of asylum seekers and migrants within the United States immigration system. The report highlights critical concerns regarding individuals held in CBP custody, those interdicted at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard, and vulnerable populations impacted by restrictive border policies such as Title 42, Remain in Mexico, and current asylum bans. By documenting cases where the U.S. government fails to provide information on the whereabouts of detainees, RAICES and its partners are seeking international accountability and intervention to ensure the protection of due process and the fundamental rights of those seeking safety, emphasizing that such disappearances violate the Declaration on the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearances.
