MAP SHOWS STATES WITH MOST MIGRANT DEPORTATION ORDERS

"Within days to weeks (and sometimes as short as within hours) of entering into the US, migrants (who often are suffering trauma from the situation the are fleeing as well as the perils of their journey) are expected to articulate the details of their reason for seeking safety to officials evaluating whether their claims can overcome certain legal thresholds.

"Having access to legal representation means an attorney can help a migrant organize and present their information in a way that is relevant for the legal tests that are being applied. Access to legal representation also means that folks with claims for protection that are likely meritorious are less likely to be deported back to harm's way merely because they could not navigate complex legal hurdles on their own."

In Harris County, 17 percent had an attorney, Los Angeles County 21 percent, and Dallas County only five percent, the lowest percentage for representation among the top ten.
