‘A PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY’: DOCTORS SOUND ALARM ON MEASLES OUTBREAK AT TEXAS ICE CENTER
Faisal Al-Juburi, co-CEO of the nonprofit Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, better known as RAICES, said that based on the organization's experience, “communicable disease outbreaks appear to be a feature, not a flaw, of immigration detention policy."
RAICES is the only legal aid provider that regularly works onsite at the Dilley facility.
“Young children are further susceptible to illness as a result of prolonged detention,” Al-Juburi said. “Medical care is often severely lacking in family detention.
“Recent news of a potential measles outbreak reinforces the concerns that RAICES has long held about the criminalization and incarceration of children and families,” Al-Juburi said. “The practice of family detention only inflicts long-lasting, irreparable and potentially fatal harm” …
